TEACHING METHODS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF JUNIOR SECONDARY THREE BUSINESS STUDIES STUDENTS’ IN ETIM EKPO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN AKWA IBOM STATE

ABSTRACT

This examined the effect of teaching method on the performance of junior secondary three Business Studies students’ in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area. The study adopted descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised of one thousand six hundred and seventy two students in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.  The sample size of the study was three hundred and ten Business Studies students’, comprising of sixty two students each  drawn from five public secondary schools in the area , determined using   sampling size determination table . Three research questions were developed for the study as well as three hypotheses formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance .Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection and was validated by my supervisor. The reliability of the research instrument was determined using reliability coefficient technique via SPSS and a reliability coefficient of 0.82 was obtained. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics.  The findings of the study revealed that lecture method , interactive method revealed insignificant positive effect on the academic  performance of Junior Secondary Three Business Studies Students’ while demonstration method revealed significant positive effect on the academic performance of Junior Secondary Three Business Studies Students’ in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area .The study concluded that lecture method , interactive method  had insignificant positive while demonstration method revealed significant positive effect on the academic performance. The recommended that Ministry of Education and other relevant educational supervisory and regulatory bodies should discourage the use of lecture and interactive method in the studied area as they impacted insignificantly on the academic performance of students’ while demonstration teaching method should be adopted by the relevant school heads since its application impacted significantly on the academic performance and it should be enforced by the relevant agencies.
