LIBRARY USE AND STAFF SUPPORT SERVICES AS PREDICTORS OF FRESHMEN’S SMOOTH TRANSITION INTO FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTH-SOUTH NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
The study analyzed library use and staff support services as predictors of freshmen’s smooth transition into federal universities in south-south Nigeria. This study adopted a correlational research design. The study was conducted in the South-South Geopolitical Zone of Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of all the year one students who transited into six Federal Universities in South South geopolitical zone, Nigeria. The sample size for the study was 2,742 first-year students drawn from the six federal universities in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. To arrive at this sample size of 2,742, the researcher adopted a multi stage sampling technique. The researcher developed instrument titled "Institutional support services and freshmen’s smooth Transition Questionnaire (ISSFSTQ) was used to collect data for the study. Face validity was employed to determine the validity of the research instrument. Internal consistency reliability was conducted for the instrument. The data collected from the trial test was analyzed using Cronbach alpha' to determine the internal consistency reliability of the instrument at 0.80 and a reliability coefficient of 0.82 was obtained for the whole instrument. The data collected for the study was analyzed using linear regression statistics. To answer the research question, the R and R2 values were used, while F value was used to test the null hypotheses. All the hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance. The study showed that library use support and staff support predict freshmen transition to a moderate extent. The study concluded that one of the recommendations made was that freshmen should make active use of institutional support services such as orientation programmes, counselling units, mentorship programmes, library services, and student clubs.
